Lilly King made her return to the Olympic trials in the prelims of the women’s 100 breaststroke on the second day of the meet in Omaha.

King, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist in this event and two-time Olympic gold medalist, posted a 1:05.67 to lead the field into tonight’s semifinals. King’s splits were 30.62 and 35.05.

No surprise there for the 11-time world championship gold medalist, but several other breaststroke stars did well to make the semis packed.

Veteran Bethany Galat took the second seed in 1:05.89, ahead of Annie Lazor (1:05.92) — both top-five performers in the world this year.

Alaska native Lydia Jacoby led off the circle-seeded heats with a 1:06.46 to take the top time at that point, finishing with the fourth seed.

Kaitlyn Dobler took the fifth seed in 1:07.42, ahead of Emily Escobedo (1:07.45), Micah Sumrall (1:07.60) and Allie Raab (1:07.69) as fifth-through-eighth was a matter of less than two tenths of a second.

Molly Hannis, who made the 2016 Olympic team in the 200 breast, takes the ninth seed into semis at 1:07.78.

Ohio State’s Hannah Bach, who helped the Buckeyes win the Big Ten Championship this season, won the third heat from lane eight with a 1:07.89 that started to build the excitement from the crowd in this event.

Michigan’s Miranda Tucker, who has put together strong performances in this event in both short-course and long-course, took 11th at the Olympic trials prelims at 1:08.07.
