Tom Dolan Invite Night Three Video Recap: Two National Age Group Records Fall

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, December 14. TWO National Age Group records fell on the second night of finals at the 2013 Speedo Tom Dolan Invitational… and a third was severely shaken.

The night kicked off with Nation’s Capital’s Cassidy Bayer taking down one of the oldest NAGs in the books. Bayer claimed Mary T Meagher’s historic girl’s 13-14 200 butterfly NAG by several tenths, finishing with a 1:56.01 ahead of the 1:56.58 Meagher set in 1979. Bayer also claimed individual titles in the 50 freestyle (23.29) and 100 backstroke (54.90).

Two heats later, Ricky Beren’s 13-14 200 fly NAG was nearly taken down by NOVA’s David Dixon. Dixon won the event in a 1:48.43, less than two tenths off of Beren’s 1:48.24 NAG. Dixon talked to Swimming World TV before tonight’s finals, expressing his desire to claim the 200 fly NAG.

Penn Charter’s Reece Whitley claimed his second NAG of the meet in the boy’s 13-14 200 breaststroke. Whitley shattered the previous record by over a second in a very exciting race that saw him nearly break the 2-minute barrier. Whitley’s final time was a 2:00.14, over a second under Curtis Ogren’s 2:01.17 from 2010. It is scary to think that Whitley is only 13, and still has a year of development to look forward to before he ages out of the 13-14 age group.

NCAP’s Janet Hu and Katie Ledecky put together exciting races in the girl’s open 50 freestyle and 200 butterfly. Although Hu — the 17-18 50 freestyle NAG record holder — won both events, Swimming World Magazine World Swimmer of the Year put up a reasonable fight against her teammate. The Tom Dolan crowd was excited to see local girl Ledecky race several off events. Hu won the 200 butterfly in a 1:54.37, ahead of Ledecky’s 1:55.88.
