Texas vs. Arizona

TUCSON, Arizona, January 30. NUMBER 3 Texas (6-1) picked up five individual victories but could not make up ground on No. 2 Arizona (7-2), as the Wildcats finished a 201-152 victory over the Longhorns in the second day of the teams’ dual meet at Arizona’s Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

Sophomore Leah Gingrich notched the first individual win of the day for Texas in the 1,650-yard freestyle, where she took top honors in 16 minutes, 42.53 seconds. Classmate Karlee Bispo led the Longhorns’ contingent in the 200 freestyle, where she was victorious in 1:48.06.

Sophomore Kathleen Hersey tallied her first of two wins on the day in the 200 butterfly in 1:57.98, and Gingrich followed in third place at 2:01.30. Bispo tacked on an additional victory in the 50 freestyle, where she led a one-two Texas finish in 23.38. Freshman Bethany Adams took second in 23.45.

Hersey, the 2009 NCAA runner-up in the 200 individual medley, scored her second win of the day in that event at 1:59.48, and Bispo added a third-place finish in 2:02.80.

Texas resumes competition on Saturday, Feb. 6 at SMU.

Meanwhile, on the men’s side, No. 1 Texas (4-1) notched four individual victories and a relay win, but No. 3 Arizona (7-0) managed to hold on to its day-one lead and closed out a tight 181-171 victory over the Longhorns Saturday afternoon in the second day of the teams’ dual meet at Arizona’s Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

Texas sophomore Jackson Wilcox registered the first win for the Horns in the 1,650-yard freestyle, where he took top honors in 15 minutes, 34.84 seconds and knocked off the nation’s top-ranked swimmer in the event, the Wildcats’ Jean Basson. UT junior Jim Robertson placed third in 16:09.09.

Seniors Dave Walters and Ricky Berens led Texas in the 200 freestyle, as Walters took first in 1:38.30 and Berens placed third in 1:38.99. Senior Hill Taylor added another victory for the Horns in the 100 backstroke in 48.84, and sophomore Neil Caskey teamed up with Berens to land a one-two Texas finish in the 200 butterfly. Caskey took first in 1:48.21, and Berens followed in 1:48.40.

Walters added a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 20.41, and sophomore Jimmy Feigen, the 2009 NCAA runner-up in the event, took third in 20.52. Freshman Austin Surhoff took second in the 200 individual medley in 1:50.93, and classmate Nick D’Innocenzo placed fourth in 1:51.51.

The Longhorns wrapped up the meet with a win by a fingertip in the 400 freestyle relay. Walters led off in 44.23, and senior Ben Van Roekel picked up the second leg in 44.32. Feigen split 44.28 on the third leg, and Berens anchored in 44.41. The relay finished in 2:57.24, just edging Arizona’s effort of 2:57.28.

Texas resumes competition on Friday, Feb. 5 at Texas A&M for the State Farm Lone Star Showdown.
