Texas A&M vs. LSU Women

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, January 24. THE eighth-ranked Texas A&M women's swimming & diving team earned a 182-110 victory over Louisiana State on Senior Day at the Student Rec Center Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies (8-1) captured 14 of 16 events, including both relays and both diving competitions. Three different athletes won two events each with two participating on winning relays as well.

Prior to the start of the meet, the Aggies recognized seniors Triin Aljand (Tallinn, Estonia), Codie Hansen (Arlington), Marissa Jasek (San Antonio), Christine Marshall (Newport News, Va.), Sally Ranzau (Alpharetta, Ga.), and Tracey Renfrew (Cibolo) for their contributions to the Texas A&M women's swimming & diving program.

Junior Alia Atkinson (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) won the 100-yard breaststroke by nearly four seconds, hitting the wall first in an NCAA consideration time of 1:01.69. Atkinson also won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.71. The two-time Jamaican Olympian swam legs on both the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams as well.

Senior Triin Aljand swept both sprint freestyle events while swimming the fly leg on the winning 200-medley relay team. Aljand posted winning times of 23.16 in the 50 free and 50.74 in the 100 free while joining with Megan Latone (Austin), Atkinson, and Sarah Woods (Birmingham, Ala.) to capture the top spot in the medley relay in 1:41.65.

Sophomore Jaele Patrick (Lilydale, Victoria, Australia) led a 1-2-3-4 A&M finish on both springboards against LSU. Patrick earned a 30-plus point win on the three-meter springboard (311.70) then followed that victory up with a winning effort of 281.02 on the one-meter to earn the first sweep of both boards of her collegiate career.

Eight-time All-American Codie Hansen was the first of two seniors to earn an individual win on Senior Day. Hansen clocked a time of 1:48.92 to lead a 1-2-3 A&M finish in the 200-yard freestyle.

Junior Emily Neal (Plano) won the 200-yard backstroke for the second consecutive day. Neal took the top spot by more than three seconds, winning in a time of 2:00.74.

Sophomore Sarah Froehlich (Hamden, Conn.) earned the first win of her collegiate career with a season-best effort in the 500-yard freestyle. Froehlich grabbed top honors in 4:59.08. Fellow sophomore Casey Hurrell-Zitelman (San Antonio) won the 1,000 free in 10:03.86, giving the class of 2011 a sweep of the distance events.

A pair of freshmen earned victories in their final home dual meet of the year. Lauren Clifford (Pollock Pines, Calif.) won the final individual event of the day, the 200 individual medley, in 2:06.14, while Rita Medrano (Aguascalientes, Mexico) was first in the 200 fly (2:02.17).

The group of Alia Atkinson, Sarah Woods, Melissa Hain (Kingwood), and Maria Sommer (Brenham) closed out A&M's final home dual meet of the year with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The group finished first in 3:24.40.

The Aggies will wrap up their dual meet schedule on the road Feb. 7 when they take on No. 5 Auburn and Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., at noon CDT.
