NEW COMMIT: The University of Mary Washington has added a new addition to their Class of 2025 from backstroker Paul Datovech of Ashland, Va.

He told Swimming World:

“I am extremely excited to announce that I have chosen to swim and study at the University of Mary Washington! Thank you to my family, coaches, teammates, and friends who have supported me throughout this process. I look forward to working with Coach Anderson! Go Eagles! ?”

Datovech, who does his club swimming with SwimRVA Rapids, has earned six best times during intrasquad meets since COVID-19. He finaled in the 100 back at Virginia Seniors back in March and finished fourth in both backstroke events at the VSTP Invitational last December.

In Summer 2019, he secured bronze in the 100m back at Eastern Zone Age Groups where he also placed fifth in the 200m back.

His best times include:

  • 50 back – 25.20
  • 100 back – 53.40
  • 200 back – 1:57.84
  • 100 fly – 55.25
  • 200 fly – 2:07.83

Also competing for Patrick Henry High School, Datovech has competed at the Virginia 4A State Championships the last three years. He placed ninth in the 100 back and 12th in the 100 fly as a junior while taking 18th in the former event during his sophomore season.

Datovech will make an immediate impact when he suits up for the Eagles in the fall of 2021. He would’ve scored in the B-final of the 100 back, 200 back, and 100 fly at the 2020 Metropolitan Championships.

The 2020-21 season marks the Eagles’ first year as a part of the Metropolitan Swimming Conference. Prior to this, Mary Washington competed in the Capital Athletic Conference Championships where they clinched 20-straight team titles.
