Swimming World Throwback Thursday Video: Brooke Bennett Repeats As 800 Free Olympic Champion

Sydney Six

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 29. YESTERDAY marked 800 days until the start of the 2016 Summer Olympics, and we celebrated with a look back at the history of the women’s 800 free through the past 10 Olympics.

Today’s Throwback Thursday video features one of those Olympic finals. In 2000, Brooke Bennett repeated as champion in the 800 with a decisive victory that made her the second-fastest performer in history with an 8:19.67.

Yana Klochkova, who had won both individual medley races earlier in the week, collected a silver medal with an impressive swim. Kaitlin Sandeno put everything on the line in her race, swimming tough and capturing the bronze medal.

Here’s video of the entire race. Apparently the video comes from Japanese television, given that the camera often cuts to a close-up of Sachiko Yamada in lane one.
