Swimming World Splashback: Last Record Standing; Janet Evans’ 800 Free

PHOENIX, Arizona, March 25. WITH the obliteration of the Wu Yanyan's 1997 200 IM world record by Stephanie Rice today at the Australian Trials, only one long course meter record remains from the turn of the century.

Janet Evans' mark in the 800 free set at the Pan Pacific Championships on Aug. 20, 1989 in Tokyo, Japan is the final ultimate prize available for swimmers that was set prior to Y2K.

As a treat to our readers, here is Swimming World's article entitled Swim and Deliver by Jeff Dimond in the October 1989 issue detailing the events surrounding the 1989 Pan Pacific Championships held in the Yoyogi Pool in Tokyo. The article includes Evans' record swim of 8:16.22.
