Miriam Sheehan turned 11 years old over the weekend, but before she entered a new age group, she said goodbye to the 10-and-under division with two new national age group records that might be around for a long time.

At a local age group meet at her home pool, the Phoenix Swim Club phenom not only broke 1:00 in the 100-yard backstroke, she obliterated the barrier with a 57.96. Using underwater dolphin kicks that showed a talent beyond her years, Sheehan broke the existing age group record held by Reagan Smith by two seconds.

Her final race in the 10-and-under age group was the 100 butterfly, and she dipped under 1:00 again with a 59.67. That was just two tenths faster than Smith’s national record of 59.80.

It’s much too early to predict how Sheehan will do in the 11-12 age group, but it’s clear she has a great future ahead of her. Congratulations to Miriam Sheehan on earning the Swimming World Performance of the Week!
