Though the 1000 freestyle isn’t swum at the NCAA Division I championships, it’s still a very exciting event to watch in dual meets, especially when an athlete is putting in a very strong performance.

That was the case over the weekend at the North Carolina State dual meet against Florida State. Anton Ipsen was very much in command of the field in the 1000 free, leading teammate Adam Linker by five seconds at the halfway point. Ipsen finally kicked his stroke into another gear at the 800-yard mark, splitting under 27 seconds for the first time in the race.

The result was a 9:00.23, which ranks as the fastest swim in the collegiate ranks so far this season. It’s also seven seconds faster than Ipsen went in a dual meet this time last year as a freshman, suggesting that Ipsen has a little bit more confidence in his sophomore year.

Ipsen was fifth in the 1650 freestyle at the NCAA championships last March, a remarkable accomplishment for a freshman. Judging by his swim in the 1000 free on Saturday, Ipsen looks good to reach a higher step on the awards podium come next March.

Ipsen wasn’t content with only posting one fast swim in the dual meet, returning to win the 500 free in 4:23.40. That’s the second-fastest time in the collegiate ranks this season.

Congratulations, Anton Ipsen, on winning the Swimming World Performance of the Week!
