Swimming World Magazine Cactus Classic Comes to a Close with High Point Awards

TEMPE/SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, May 28. SUN Devil Aquatics Nick Brunelli provided the top performance of the final day of long course meter competition at the Swimming World Magazine Cactus Classic on May 28. To complete a solid early-season meet, Brunelli touched in 50.66 to clear the Olympic Trial cut in the 100 free.

Scottsdale Aquatic Club ended up taking home bragging rights with a combined team triumph of 6,033.50 points. SAC's co-sponsor at the event, Sun Devil Aquatics, placed second with 4,089.50 points, while Brophy East Swim Team tallied 2,973.50 points to take third.

Girls 10&U: Amy Bilquist, Silver Fins, 150 points
Boys 10&U: Brandon Hoffer, Scottsdale Aquatic Club, 158.50 points
Girls 11-12: Celina Li, Scottsdale Aquatic Club, 150 points
Boys 11-12: William Licon, West Texas Typhoon, 160 points
Girls 13-14: Traycie Swartz, Sun Devil Aquatics, 144 points
Boys 13-14: Chase Lovelace, Nashville Aquatic Club, 140 points
Women Senior: Whitney Lopus, Sun Devil Aquatics, 120 points
Men Senior: Nate Telep, Scottsdale Aquatic Club/Alex Lendrum, Brophy East Swim Team, 102 points

The meet, put on by the Scottsdale Aquatic Club and Sun Devil Aquatics, played host to much top-flight action. As the title sponsor of the event, we'd like to extend a special thanks to all of the meet officials and volunteers for rolling out a stellar competition.

Women's 200 IM
Sun Devil Aquatics grabbed the top two spots in the event as Whitney Lopus touched out teammate Christine Olson, 2:23.73 to 2:23.77, for the sweep. Meanwhile, Danielle Milligan of Scottsdale Aquatic Club picked up third in 2:25.97.

Nate Telep of Scottsdale Aquatics held off a pair of Nashville Aquatic Club teammates to stop the clock in 2:13.32 for the title. Hayes Johnson (2:13.97) and Curtis Lovelace (2:14.57) rounded out the top three with second and third-place finishes.

Women's 100 free
Sun Devil Aquatics dominated the event with a 1-2-3-4 effort. Caitlin Andrew clocked a 58.26 for the crown, while Haley Krakoski (58.81), Lindsey Brown (59.09) and Jess Perazzo (59.31) took second, third and fourth, respectively.

Nick Brunelli of Sun Devil Aquatics put together a great finishing event to the meet with a 50.66 to clear the Olympic Trial cut in the 100 free by nearly a second. Teammate Sean Boyle clocked a 52.72 for second place, while Atiba Wade finished third in 52.89.

Women's 200 breast
Another dominant effort from Sun Devil Aquatics with a top-three sweep came in the women's 200 breast. Adriana Marmolejo hit the wall in 2:36.73 for a senior national cut en route to the win. Her teammates Christine Olson (2:40.98) and Lindsey Russenberger (2:45.60) rounded out the top three.

Curtis Lovelace of Nashville Aquatic Club closed a strong meet with a win in the men's 200 breast. Lovelace, who has been featured on SwimmingWorldMagazine.com as a promising senior-to-be next season, turned in a 2:27.96 for first. Meanwhile, Scottsdale Aquatic Club earned the next two spots as Nate Telep placed second in 2:31.49 and Robert Barrett took third in 2:33.03.

Ashley Evans of Brophy East Swim Team claimed another individual title, this time with a 17:19.57 in the distance freestyle event. Sun Devil Aquatics' Angela Duckworth picked up second in 17:49.52, while Lindsey Laporte of Scottsdale Aquatic Club placed third in 18:09.95.

Men's 1500 free
Scottsdale Aquatic Club topped the men's 1500 free with a top-three sweep. Michael Zoldos stopped the clock in 16:31.18 for the title, while teammates Gunnar Schmidt (16:42.42) and Tyler Johnson (16:41.71) battled for second place.
