Apply to be a Journalism or Social Media Intern

Swimming World Magazine is seeking a gifted group of writers and content creators for the summer of 2023 who are interested in enhancing their journalism and social-media skills, while building valuable experience to add to their resumes. Our successful internship programs have connected interns with jobs in related fields across the country.

Please note this will be a remote internship, and is open to college students and beyond. This program is conducted via email and Slack, meaning all work can be done remotely.

If you are interested in enhancing your skills in journalism, communications, marketing, social media, public relations, blogging, writing, graphics design, or web content writing, please apply. We are seeking interns from all areas of aquatic sports – swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming, and open water swimming – and beyond.

Journalism Internship

Our journalism interns will learn the ropes from our senior writers by assisting them with a variety of journalism projects. Their work will be valuable as Swimming World looks to provide its readers with content that explores several layers of the sport. By ensuring the sport is covered through multiple lenses and angles, Swimming World is looking to maintain the momentum that has established new records for its readership.

The program may cover the following:

  • Gathering information and research (and learning about aquatic sports in the process)
  • Prioritizing and understanding how you fit into a news desk and wider news operation
  • How to write a news story
  • How to write a feature
  • Writing for digital media
  • Shorthand/recording and how they apply in law
  • Understanding media law
  • Legal and ethical considerations
  • Using social media in journalism
  • Technology tools for journalists

A large percentage of Swimming World’s most-read online content has been written by our stellar interns.  Our cohort of interns significantly improves our ability to cover aquatic sports and events and engage the worldwide community of athletes, coaches, fans, and enthusiasts.

Social Media Internship

Social media is a widely relied upon source for news, entertainment, and connection for people all over the world.  At Swimming World, we use social media as a way to extend the reach of our news stories and to connect with the swimming community in an engaging and interesting way. In this internship, you will have the opportunity to create original content for a variety of social platforms.

We also use social media to provide stories about people in the aquatics community, share photos and videos of events, re-share engaging content we find, give inspiration for athletes at all levels, celebrate the heroes of aquatic sports, and much more.

As a social media intern you will learn about:

  • Creating original content
  • Connecting the swimming community
  • Guidelines and ethics for using social media on a professional level
  • How to cover remote events via social media as needed
  • Working with influencers and brands
  • Using a variety of technology platforms
  • Attention to detail
  • Opportunities to create and execute social media campaigns
