Swimming Canada Announces Paris Olympic Selection Criteria, Set Trials for May 13-19

Swimming Canada on Tuesday released its selection criteria for 2024, including for the Paris Olympics. That will be selected solely from Olympic Trials, as was to be expected, the meet to be held May 13-19, 2024, at the Olympic Park in Montreal.

Canada also laid out the pathway to the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, to be held Feb. 2-18, 2024 in Doha, Qatar. That will be the third Worlds in a span of 21 months. As such, there won’t be a dedicated qualification meet, though there is a Canadian Swimming Championships from Aug. 1-6 in Toronto this summer that will be part of the process.

Other meets in 2023 where swimmers can qualify for Worlds in 2024 for Canada are: The 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, the Canadian Open Water Festival (Aug. 12 in Welland, Ont.), the World Junior Swimming Championships (Sept. 4-9 in Netanya, Israel) and the Pan American Games (Oct. 21-25 in Santiago, Chile).

“We are pleased to release our approved nomination and selection criteria for 2024 following a consultation period and the formal approval from the Swimming Canada Selection Committee,” Swimming Canada High Performance Director and National Coach John Atkinson said in a press release. “We can now show a clear path to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for our pool swimmers, as well as our open water marathon athletes.”

The Canadian team’s selection criteria for the Paris Games in the pool follow six priorities, with a maximum of 26 male and 26 female swimmers in the delegation. The country will take the top two finishers (with automatic qualifying times) at national trials, or other A cut times within the qualification if there’s an opening for a spot.
