Swim Coach Trent McNicol Cleared of Sexual Assault Charges

WHITBY, Ontario, April 6. FORMER Whitby Dolphins coach Trent McNicol has been cleared of all sexual assault charges spanning back nearly a year ago. The Toronto Star was the first to report the charges being dropped.

Last year the former coach of Pan American Games medalist Jen Beckberger, was charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation of a young female, with allegations that the “offences occurred when she was between 10 and 12, starting in 2005.”

Yesterday, the prosecuting attorney dropped all charges against McNicol stating that “there was no reasonable prospect of conviction.”

“To have it behind me is great,” McNicol told the Star. “But I now have to spend the next — who knows? — six months, 20 years, rebuilding what I once had.”

The Star further reports that during his time waiting to be cleared, he had to live in a different town away from his family and under the supervision of his father.

“It's a roller coaster,” McNicol told the Star. “You almost jokingly look around for a camera and say Allen Funt is going to pop out somewhere and say 'Smile, you're on Candid Camera.' It just seems so surreal.”
