Sun Yang Cruises to Victory in 400 Free at Chinese Nationals

HUANGSHAN, China, September 24. THE third day of Chinese Long Course Nationals put Chinese sensation Sun Yang on center display as he raced to yet another victory among the backdrop of coaching controversy in China.

Sun dominated the men's 400 free with a smooth time of 3:43.97, off his top-ranked time of 3:40.14 at the Olympics but well ahead of Li Yunqi's second-place time of 3:47.96. Wang Kecheng earned third-place honors in 3:52.77. Sun could be looking at a new coaching staff if news out of China is to be believed that Swimming Australia is banning Denis Cotterell from coaching foreign swimmers.

Shao Yiwen topped the women's 400 free with a 4:07.18, while Pang Wenxian placed second in 4:08.55. Xu Danlu rounded out the top three in 4:08.57. Xu, just 13, is having a breakout meet. Yesterday, she clocked in an 8:27.43 in the 800 free.

Cheng Feiyi raced to victory in the men's 50 back with a 25.37, while Xu Jiayu and Sun Xiaolei tied for second in the sprint back with matching 25.67s. In women's backstroke competition, Luan Xiaoxuan clinched the 200 back with a 2:11.72. Liao Yali posted a second-place 2:12.10, while Li Yuan earned third in 2:12.79.

Huang Chaosheng hit the wall in 2:12.67 to win the men's 200 breast, while Huang Yunkun took second in 2:14.88. Lai Zhongjian claimed third in 2:15.56. Sun Ye posted a 1:08.84 to win the women's 100 breast with Liu Xiaoyu taking a close second in 1:09.05. Wu Yuele rounded out the top three in 1:09.44. Zhang Fenglin snagged the men's 200 IM title in 1:59.79. Yang Zhixian (2:01.03) and Mao Feilian (2:01.10) took second and third.
