Sun Mengyue Captures Third Gold Medal of Chinese Nationals

HUANGSHAN, China, October 27. THE Chinese National Championships continued to roll on with Chinese Navy’s Sun Mengyue clinching her third gold medal of the meet. The competition, taking place in long course meters, lost some luster with how busy China has been in the long course season as most of the top swimmers elected not to compete after focusing on Worlds and the Chinese National Games earlier this year.

Sun collected her third gold of the meet with a 59.52 in the women’s 100-meter fly, while teammate Song Yutong touched second in 1:00.15. Zhejiang’s Ma Jieyu claimed third in 1:01.15.

Jiangsu’s Shen Duo opened the night by touching out Zhejiang’s Shao Yiwen, 1:58.82 to 1:58.97, in the women’s 200-meter free. Shen stands seventh in the world rankings with a 1:56.27 from the Chinese National Games. This is Shen’s second gold medal this week. Zhejiang’s Shen Junjie placed third in 2:00.16.

Zhejiang’s Xu Jiayu just missed the top 10 in the world with a 25.05 to win the men’s 50-meter back. Beijing’s Duan Qiong took second in 26.02, while Liaoning’s Jiang Shihang finished third in 26.03.

Chinese Navy’s Wang Pudong surprisingly picked up the men’s 200-meter fly title even with his cap falling off mid-swim. He clocked a 1:59.45 to beat Zhejiang’s Zheng Tong, who touched second in 1:59.95. Zhejiang’s Wu Yuhang wound up third in 2:00.95.

Local media continued to harp on Ye Shiwen’s performance, even though she came into the meet just to swim off events. She clocked a 1:12.75 in the women’s 100-meter breast prelims and missed out on the finale. Shaanxi’s He Yun topped the event in 1:08.92, while Zhejiang’s He Yuzhe finished second in 1:09.62. Jiangsu’s Shi Jinglin pocketed third in 1:09.69.

Zhejiang swept the podium in the men’s 400-meter IM. Shi Yi won in 4:20.90, while teammates Wang Fu (4:25.50) and Du Limin (4:26.42) placed second and third in the distance medley event.

Zhejiang continued to dominate the relays with a 3:22.34 win in the men’s 400 freestyle relay, while Chinese Navy took second in 3:22.65. Jiangsu snared third in 3:24.27.
