Streamlined News: USA Nationals Psych Sheet, 30 Days to Worlds!

PHOENIX, Arizona, June 19. THE psych sheet for the USA world championship trials was released today, and all the top swimmers are going to be there fighting for spots on the team traveling to Barcelona next month. Seven of the nine American Olympic champions from last year will be racing in Indianapolis starting on Tuesday, with Michael Phelps enjoying retirement and Rebecca Soni taking the year off. And of course, we could see a few people have major breakout swims, which always happens in the year after the Olympics.

We're exactly 30 days from the start of the FINA aquatics world championships in Barcelona, Spain, and pretty much the only thing left to do apparently is figure out who will represent Great Britain and the United States in pool swimming. Athletes and teams in the other five disciplines are just about set, including in the new event to the world championships, high diving. The men will dive from a 27-meter platform, while the women will take off from a 23-meter platform on the Moll de la Fusta on the Mediterranean Sea, where the open water competitions will also take place.

The official song of the world championships was released earlier this week, and the music video for it features the band Els Amics de les Arts performing underwater to an audience that includes divers and open water swimmers.

For those attending the world championships, it's likely you'll hear this song often during breaks in competition, along with the much-catchier song for the mascot, named Xop, or Drop in English. We just wanted to prepare you.

Construction of the competition pool at the Palau Sant Jordi started earlier this week, with synchronized swimming christening the temporary pool starting on July 20. The training pool is nearly complete as well, and as you can see from this photo, the deck still needs to be put into place, and water needs to be put into the pool. Construction is being overseen by Myrtha Pools, the company behind the temporary pool used in Omaha for the Olympic Trials.
