Streamlined News: Seniors Choose College; Cal Bears Win Season Opener; USA Wins Three Medals at Junior World Diving

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 11. THE University of Southern California had a great day yesterday, getting two great swimmers to make verbal commitments to become Trojans next year. We told you on yesterday's show that Chelsea Chenault was going to USC, and now Steven Stumph has made the same commitment. Stumph hails from Moraga in central California, and is a rising star in the breaststroke and IM ranks. Stumph won the junior national title in the 200 breast this summer and was one of the top high school swimmers last season in the 100 breast and 200 IM.

Whitney Hite's women's team at Wisconsin will welcome Dana Grindall next fall to help out in the butterfly events. She was the bronze medalist in the 100 fly at the junior Pan Pacs this summer and is close to an automatic NCAA qualifying time in that event.

The California Golden Bears men's swim team kicked off their dual meet season yesterday with a decisive win over the University of the Pacific. The Bears won the first nine events, then swam exhibition for the remaining five. Reigning NCAA champions Marcin Tarczynski and Will Hamilton each won an individual event, as did freshman Jacob Pebley, one of the top freshmen in the country this year.

The United States is cleaning up in Australia at the world junior diving championships. Yesterday, Gracia Leydon Mahoney won the women's 3-meter event by less than three points over China's Zheng Qulin. Today, David Dinsmore and Michael Hixon won bronze medals. Dinsmore won his medal in the 14-15 years old age group for the 10-meter platform, while Hixon took the same medal in the 16-18 age group for the 1-meter springboard. Competition continues through Saturday in Adelaide, and so far Great Britain is leading the medal count.
