Streamlined News: New Zealand Picking World Teams; Celebrity Diving Show Debuting in US

PHOENIX, Arizona, March 19. NEW Zealand is picking its team this week for the world championships, and in the middle of all the fast swimming, two swimmers broke Paralympic world records today, in the same event. Sophie Pascoe swam a 29.21 in the 50 butterfly prelims, then lowered the world record in the S10 division with a 28.38 in the final. In the same event, Mary Fisher lowered her world record in the S11 bracket with a 34.35 in prelims and 33.25 in finals. Between these two women, 10 Paralympic medals were won for New Zealand last year, and they will be looked to at this summer's world championships.

Lauren Boyle will also be a name to watch at the FINA world championships, having already qualified to represent New Zealand in the 200, 400 and 1500 freestyles, and will likely add the 800 later this week. She is the reigning short course world champion in the 800 freestyle. Glenn Snyders is looking to swim all three breaststroke events at worlds, and has so far qualified in the 50 and 100.

Tonight on ABC in the United States, Olympic champions David Boudia and Greg Louganis will be a part of a new celebrity competition show called “Splash,” in which the celebrities will attempt to dive off the 10-meter platform. The show is modeled off the Dutch version, which begat a popular British spinoff earlier this year, in which Olympian Tom Daley was the mentor to the celebrities. Boudia will be one of the judges on the American show, while Louganis will mentor the celebrities that include comedian Louie Anderson, basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and actress Keisha Knight-Pulliam from “The Cosby Show.” Check your local listings to find out when the show airs in your time zone.
