Streamlined News: Florida Olympians Chomping to Compete; Open Water Swimmer Chooses Sprint-Based College

PHOENIX, Arizona, September 27. THE first big college swimming meet of the season begins tomorrow in Gainesville, Florida, as the University of Florida hosts the All-Florida Invitational. This will be the first competition for the six Gators who went to the 2012 Olympics, including two-time medalist Elizabeth Beisel, who is starting her junior year at Florida. This will be Canadian Sinead Russell's first collegiate competition, and her first meet since swimming in the 200 backstroke final in London. Other Olympians for Florida competing this weekend include South Africa's Sebastien Rousseau, an NCAA finalist in multiple events, and Poland's Marcin Cieslak, who has helped Florida in the middle distance events. Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida State, Miami, North Florida, Nova Southeastern and Rollins College are also competing in the meet.

We've got information on another high school senior making a college choice, and this one looks a little unorthodox, at least on the surface. Janardan Burns, a member of the USA Swimming national open water team, is going to be a freshman next year at UC-Berkeley, known for being a sprinting powerhouse. Burns will be a big help to the Golden Bears in the 500 and mile, and could also contribute to the 800 free relay.
