Streamlined News: Fast Swims at US Open; Diving and Water Polo Olympic Recaps

PHOENIX, Arizona, August 8. THE US Open championships completed its first day of action at the IU Natatorium with a quick swim by Megan Romano in the 100 freestyle. Romano swam a 53.92 to win the race, a time that would have won the Olympic Trials last month by four hundredths of a second. Romano swam in the semifinals of the 100 free at Trials but did not advance.

Another swimmer performing well at the US Open is Stephanie Peacock, who broke Janet Evans' 22-year-old record in the 800 free with an 8:24.36 and dropped six seconds off her lifetime best, which she did at Olympic Trials.

Kelsey Floyd and Jasmine Tosky provided the other highlight from the meet, as the two battled in the 200 fly final. Floyd won with a 2:08.74 and Tosky was second in 2:08.91. Floyd's time puts her in the top 20 in the world, while Tosky stands at 21st place.

Kevin Cordes is known for swimming fast in prelims, and he did that today with a national age group record in the 200 breast with a 2:11.88. Cordes now owns all the national age group records in the breaststroke events for the 17-18 age group and tonight he'll look to lower that time in the final.
