Streamlined News: China Swim Team Arrives in England; Community Mourns Passing of Alec Cosgarea


PHOENIX, Arizona, July 11. SUN Yang headlines the Chinese Olympic swimming team that arrived this week in Great Britain to begin acclimating to the time zone and climate in advance of the competition. Sun, the world record holder in the 1500 free, is training in Bath, England, with a few members of the Chinese team, while others are training in Leeds. Liu Zige, the reigning gold medalist in the 200 fly, is staying in China until July 23, according to a report in the China Daily. The Dutch team is also in Leeds at their training camp, though there’s no word which swimmers are currently there. Several more non-European teams will be arriving at their training camps in various western European locations throughout the next few days, including the Americans.

The swimming community is mourning the loss of 17-year-old Alec Cosgarea after a car accident Monday evening in Baltimore. Cosgarea was part of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club and a key swimmer for the McDonogh School, having earned All-America status in the 100 fly. His brother, Drew, swims for Stanford, and his parents were also swimmers. A funeral service for Alec will be held Saturday in Baltimore.
