PHOENIX, Arizona, September 16. USA Swimming yesterday released information on a mandatory online Athlete Protection Education Program for its non-athlete members.

The program was introduced at the United States Aquatic Sports Convention in Florida, and gives information on recognizing grooming, boundary violations and the effects of abuse. The program was constructed by Praesidium, provides risk management models for all age groups. This is only the first phase of the Athlete Protection Education Program, with the next phases to roll out later this year. You can go to usaswimming.org/protect to learn more.

The Cincinnati Marlins is celebrating its 50th anniversary tomorrow, and the team has been a breeding ground for many of the best American coaches and swimmers in history. Paul Bergen, Jay Fitzgerald, Denny Pursley, Bob Bowman, Skip Kenney, Jack Simon and Frank Busch are just a few of the now-notable coaches who have spent time with the Marlins. Though they are more known for their swimming accomplishments, Gary Hall Sr. and Charlie Hickox spent time with the Marlins as coaches. Eighteen swimmers who wore a Marlins cap in their career have participated in the Olympics since 1968, including Jenny Kemp, Deena Dearduff and Betsy Mitchell, who spent just a short time there. Six members of the Marlins made the 1980 Olympic team, including Mary T. Meagher and Glenn Mills.

Joe Hudepohl and Nate Dusing are two recent swimmers who put the Marlins on the worldwide map. Both swimmers set long-lasting national high school records while swimming in Cincinnati, and represented the USA in four consecutive Olympics: Hudepohl in 1992 and 1996, and Dusing in 2000 and 2004. David Mosko and Whitney Myers are two former Marlin swimmers looking to continue the tradition and land a spot on next year’s Olympic team. The infamous Keating family has a long history with the Marlins, and the pool where the Marlins train bears Charlie Keating’s name. The list of Marlins alumni is very long and distinguished, and it’s likely many of them will be there this weekend to celebrate the team’s legacy.
