PHOENIX, Arizona, September 2. THE fourth day of finals at the Jose Finkel Trophy meet was highlighted by Joao Gomes in the semifinals of the 50 breast. After swimming a 27.58 in yesterday’s evening prelims session, Gomes swam a 27.46 today, which puts him ninth in the world. Gomes will face a challenge from Felipe Silva, the reigning world champion, in tomorrow’s final.

Cesar Cielo and Inge Dekker cruised through the semifinals of the 100 free today, not choosing to put up the fastest time of the day. Cielo will take the second seed in the final with his 50.43, while Dekker, who is part of the formidable Dutch 400 free relay group, will be the fourth seed in tomorrow’s women’s final.

South Africa’s best swimmers are in Mozambique for the All-Africa Games, which starts Monday. Cameron van der Burgh, Roland Schoeman, Darian Townsend, Natalie du Toit, Wendy Trott, Jean Basson and others will highlight the meet that will give them another chance to swim fast this year, after many of them had already performed well at the world championships. Also scheduled to swim at the All-Africa Games will be Olympic champions Kirsty Coventry for Zimbabwe and Ous Mellouli of Tunisia.
