Steve Steketee Named Assistant Swimming Coach At South Carolina

COLUMBIA, South Carolina, September 26. SOUTH Carolina first-year head coach McGee Moody has announced the signing of Steve Steketee as an assistant coach for the Gamecock swimming program. Steketee comes to the University of South Carolina from West Virginia University where he served as the sole assistant coach for the past three seasons. In those three seasons, WVU rose from the bottom of its conference to being the Big East Champions.

"Steve (Steketee) joins us from a West Virginia program that has improved dramatically since his arrival in Morgantown," Moody said. "He has established himself as one of the most sought after assistant coaches in the country. He is a great recruiter and will help to attract the top talent to USC. We are lucky to have him."

Last year, the WVU men's swimming and diving team was ranked as high as 17th in the CSCAA Dual Meet Poll and finished 20th at the NCAA Championships. During his time at WVU, Steketee helped guide nine swimmers to numerous All-American awards.

"I had an amazing three years at West Virginia University working with one of the best coaches in the country in Sergio Lopez," Steketee said. "I hope to apply the things that I've learned here at South Carolina."

Before coaching at WVU, Steketee spent one season at the University of Denver where his responsibilities included workout design and implementation, stroke analysis, recruiting, and organizing the inaugural swim camp.

Steketee graduated from Northwestern University in 2001 with a B.A. in political science and philosophy. Swimming for the Wildcats, Steketee was a Big Ten Champion and All-American Honorable Mention in the 200 freestyle. He was also a three-year captain and 2000 Olympic Trials Qualifier. He is married to the former Abby Meadema.
