NEW COMMIT: Stephen Gilbert, a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and senior at Patriot High School in Virginia, has verbally committed to Milligan College. Gilbert specializes in backstroke and IM events, but offers a versatility that will bolster a program showing steady improvement under head coach Spencer Scarth in his first year with the team.

He told Swimming World:

“I’m very excited to announce my commitment to attend Milligan starting Fall 2020. I chose Milligan because the team is really close, they work hard and have a lot of fun, and it feels most like a home. I’m confident that Milligan will help me achieve great things in the pool, in my career, and in life. I can’t wait to join the Milligan family.”

Gilbert swims with Occoquan Swimming and his current times would have placed him in the A finals for several events at last year’s NAIA National Championships. With times ranking in the top 10 among NAIA swimmers this season, he figures to make an immediate impact next year as a Milligan Buffalo.

His best times include:

  • 200 back – 1:51.58
  • 100 back – 52.35
  • 400 IM – 4:03.70
  • 200 IM – 1:54.57
  • 200 free – 1:44.07

Before heading off to the 2019 NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships, Milligan placed second overall in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Championship only 22 points behind Union for the conference championship. Milligan sent 16 members to nationals, and had several All-American honors. Milligan finished last year’s national championship No. 15 on the women’s side and No. 17 on the men’s side.
