Bella Smits has given her verbal commitment to swim at the University of North Dakota beginning with the 2017-2018 season.
Smits told Swimming World about her decision,
“I am thrilled to announce my commitment to swim and study at the University of North Dakota. I chose UND because of the close knit team, academics, and the cozy feel of the campus. The coaches there are amazing and are so invested in their swimmers. Head Coach Chris will be my Sprint coach and I feel like he will push me to be the best athlete, student and swimmer that I can be. Go Hawks!”
The Andover high School senior is in the National Honor Society and is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.
Smits is in her seventh year swimming with FASTjets in Blaine, Minnesota. At the 2015 Minnesota Girls High School State Championships, Smits posted All American times as she won the 100 freestyle (50.40) and earned runner up honors in the 50 (23.20).
Her best times are:
50/100 Free: 23.20/50.40
50/100/200 Back: 26.07/55.61/2:02.64
100 Fly: 55.88
North Dakota finished fifth at the 2016 WAC Championships. With her best times, Smits would have been the runner up in the 100 freestyle and tied for third in the 50. She also would have finished fourth in the 100 backstroke. With those times, Smits should jump onto relays as well.
She joins Lauren Stigler in the North Dakota Class of 2021.
