NEW COMMIT: Novato, Calif. native Zach McIntyre has verbally committed to Duke University and will join the Blue Devils as a member of the class of 2024.

Primarily a sprint freestyler, McIntyre does his club swimming with Marin Pirates and owns four Summer Juniors time standards. He most recently recorded a best time at Junior Nationals this past summer after earning silver in the 50m free at Santa Clarita Speedo Sectionals. Last winter, he earned 100% personal best times at Juniors West before going on to win the 200 free at Arizona Senior Opens.

Also competing for Novato High School, McIntyre is a four-time CIF North Coast Section Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American placed fourth in the 100/200 free combo during as a junior after finishing fourth and 14th, respectively, in those events during his sophomore season.

He told Swimming World:

“I am extremely excited to be going to Duke next year! I chose it because of its great balance of academics and high level swimming. I’m excited to become part of the Duke family and make relationships in the four years that will last a lifetime.  I’d like to thank my coaches and teammates for helping me along the way. Go Blue Devils!”

His best times include:

  • 50 free – 20.49
  • 100 free – 44.93
  • 200 free – 1:39.02
  • 100 fly – 50.17

When he arrives in Durham at the start of the 2020-21 season, McIntyre will add his talents to a sprint training group that’ll include Nathaniel Hartley and Matthew Wheelan. He will also find a good training partner in future classmate Lucas Johnson who has also sent his verbal to Duke.
