Splashbacks: Michael Phelps DUI Takes Over Sept-Oct Storylines

PHOENIX – Just months after a triumphant comeback to the sport, Michael Phelps’ arrest for a second DUI and the aftermath owned the headlines during September and October at Swimming World. During the next few days, we’ll take a look back in “Splashbacks”, the most read stories of 2014.

Not much else other than Kristy Kowal and Kara Forbis writing a letter of support for suspended Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle could trump the interest created when Michael Phelps was arrested for his second DUI. On top of plenty of interest in the arrest, everyone in swimming was interested in what his punishment would be and if he’d remain on the worlds roster.

Two of Jack Bauerle’s former swimmers, Kristy Kowal and Kara Forbis, wrote a letter to the university expressing their concern regarding the type of defense Bauerle was getting in the NCAA’s investigation into academic issues surrounding NCAA champion Chase Kalisz.  This story, which dominated the swimming community throughout all of 2014, finally came to a close in mid-December.
