Speedo Winter Nationals: Zhier Fan Sets West Meet Mark in 200 Breast at 1:52

Zhier Fan of Metroplex Aquatic Club set the meet record at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships in Austin, Texas, Saturday in the boys 200 breaststroke.

Fan was the top seed after prelims at 1:56.89. He lopped a further four seconds off in finals to clock in at 1:52.92. The 17-year-old downed the meet record set in 2019 by Ben Dillard, when he went 1:54.74.

Second was Andrew Zou in 1:56.75.

Fan scratched out of the 100 breast despite carrying the top seed at 53.36.

Most of the intrigue on the final night in Austin centered on the girls side. Katie Grimes was the obvious front-runner with her win in the 1,650 free, with one of the 10 fastest times in history, followed by Sandpipers of Nevada teammate Claire Weinstein in a 13-14 national age-group record.

Grimes then turned around and nearly snuck out a win in the very next event. She ended up second in the girls 200 backstroke, despite somehow summoning a 27.89 after 1,800 yards of racing to make it interesting. But Kennedy Noble had just enough to hold her off by a tenth, winning in 1:52.73 to the 1:52.83 of Grimes. Teagan O’Dell was a half-second back of Noble in third.

The race of the night was supplied by the arguably the performer of the meet in Bella Sims. She and Leah Hayes ended up tied in the girls 100 freestyle, both 16-year-olds touching in 48.52 seconds. Hayes had the stronger first 50 (23.33) despite Sims beating her a full two-tenths off the block. Sims had the second-fastest final 50 of the night, though, in 25.01 to knot it up. Katie Crom was third in 48.64.

Hayes had gotten the better of Sims in the 200 individual medley, but that was the exception rather than the rule for the duo this week. Sims won the 500 free, 200 free and 100 fly and was second in the 200 IM.

The Sandpipers swimmer would add the 200 fly to her tally before the night was done, Sims clocking in at 1:53.91 to nip Justina Kozan by .37 seconds. The Sandpipers would also win the 400 free relay to finish the night, Grimes leading off in 50.10, followed by Weinstein (49.18), Audrey Yu (49.81) and Sims (48.73) for a 3:17.82.

Emma Weber closed fast in the final 50 to steal a win from Piper Enge in the girls 200 breast. She was second at the 150-yard wall and more than a second back after 100 yards. But she went 33.57 on the final 50 to get to the wall first in 2:09.04, just .05 ahead of Enge.

On the boys side, Matthew Chai made quick work of the 1,650 free. He clocked in at 14:45.37 to win by more than 10 seconds on Alec Enyeart.

Nick Simons completed the backstroke double by claiming the 200 back in 1:40.98. The third seed from prelims, he put the race away early on the way to a win by nearly three-quarters of a second. Keaton Jones was second in 1:41.71.

Quintin McCarty capped the sprint double in the 100 free, going 42.78 to easy away from the field. Alex McMahon was the closest challenger at 43.12.

Ilya Kharun added another butterfly triumph in the 200, though this time without the record-breaking flourish. The 16-year-old from Sandpipers still went 1:42.39, a more than one-second margin on the field. Conor McKenna was second in 1:43.65.
