Speedo Western Canadian Championships: Chantal VanLandeghem Triples

WINNIPEG, Canada, February 17. CHANTAL VanLandeghem of Winnipeg is showing her hometown folks why she is considered one of Canada's brightest young stars in swimming after a triple gold performance on Friday at the Speedo Western Championships.

VanLandeghem, who'll chase a spot on the Olympic team at trials next month in Montreal, sprinted to victories in the 50 butterfly, 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. The 17-year-old's most impressive time was 24.56 in the 50 freestyle which was less than a half second off the Canadian record.

She is scheduled to race in nine individual events overall this week.

Other winners in the 16 and over category were Kierra Smith of Kelowna, B.C., in the 200 breaststroke and Breanne Siwicki of Winnipeg in the 400 IM.

In the men's 17 and over winners were Dillon Perron of Winnipeg in the 50 butterfly, Artur Kroitor of Winnipeg in the 50 freestyle, Russell Wood of Calgary in the 100 backstroke, Sean Nugent of Burnaby, B.C., in the 200 breaststroke and David Dimitrov of Calgary in the 400 IM.

In the men's 16 and under, Scott McGillivray of Calgary took double gold with wins in the 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle. Other winners in the age group were Bryce Kananowicz of Winnipeg in the 100 backstroke, James Dergousoff of North Vancouver in the 200 breaststroke and Jonathan Brown of Calgary in the 400 IM.

In the women's 15 and under winners were: Haley Black of Prince George, B.C., in the 50 butterfly, Paige Kremer of Edmonton in the 50 freestyle, Mackenzie Glover of Winnipeg in the 100 backstroke, Eva Nagy of Vancouver in the 200 breaststroke and Lili Margitai of Edmonton in the 400 IM.

Competition continues throught to Sunday.
