PHOENIX, Arizona, May 27. LAST week was Missy Franklin’s first long course meet after a very impressive collegiate debut. Now with a focus on the summer season and the Pan Pacific championships, Franklin got things off to a strong start at the Mel Zajac Canada Cup last weekend with a 2:09.57 in the 200 backstroke.

Though the time is five seconds off her world record, it’s ninth in the global standings, a good place to be at this point in the season. Of course, Franklin will work her way to that number one standing as we get closer to August. This swim is also notable because Franklin was mostly a freestyler during the college season, swimming just freestyle at the NCAA championships last March. Franklin’s backstroke looks pretty good from our viewpoint, which could be dangerous for anyone looking to line up next to her at the USA Swimming nationals or the Pan Pacs.

Congratulations, Missy. You’ve won the Speedo Performance of the Week.
