Southern Zone Senior Long Course Championships

PLANTATION, Florida, Aug. 12. METROPLEX’S 879 points earned them the combined team title at the Southern Zone Senior Championships July 29-Aug. 2 in Plantation, Fla. Following close behind Metroplex in the team race were First Colony (second, 845) and The Woodlands (third, 826). Fort Lauderdale finished in fourth (615), followed by Princeton Piranhas (544).

Five swimmers set more than one Southern Zone senior record each. Memphis Thunder’s Katie Kelsoe bettered both of the women’s backstroke marks (100 back, 1:05.88; 200 back, 2:19.81) and the 200 fly (2:23.94). Carrie Bonfield of the Princeton Piranhas bettered zone standards in the women’s 800 and 1500 free (9:07.27 and 17:30.59). Fort Lauderdale’s Carlotta Verita set records in the women’s 50 and 100 breast (33.85 and 1:14.70), and teammate Harper Bruens took charge in the 50 back (30.00) and 50 fly (28.78). The lone male record breaker was South Florida’s Marc Rojas, who lowered marks in the 50 and 100 breast (29.82 and 1:03.72).

Posting new records in one event each were Metroplex’s Sofie Underdahl (women’s 200 breast, 2:39.89), First Colony’s Alicia Finnegan (women’s 100 fly, 1:03.20) and Kaitlyn Swinney (women’s 400 IM, 5:01.26), Princeton’s Sydney Bornstein (women’s 200 fly, 2:18.87), Fort Lauderdale’s Jason McCormick (men’s 100 free, 52.14) and Guy Fernandes (men’s 50 back, 28.35), and Memphis Tiger’s Grant kelton (men’s 200 back, 2:09.07).
