Southern Zone Championships: Distance Events Open Meet

ATLANTA, Georgia, July 27. The Southern Zone Championships opened today with long course meters distance action. Rachel Harrington and Michael Reynolds opened the meet with victories in the only events for their respective genders.

Florida's Harrington won the women's 800 free in 9:07.73, ahead of her teammate Kelsey Frantz, who took second in 9:12.09. Frantz just outswam Alabama's Sara Menke, who ended up third in 9:12.41. Additionally, Florida swimmers Cecilia Williams (9:09.54) and Cameron Davis (9:10.23) clocked especially fast times in the 13-14 age group.

Meanwhile, Georgia's Reynolds clocked 16:21.06 in the 1500 free to out-distance North Carolina's Ben Miller, who took second in 16:23.11, while Gold Coast (Florida)'s Samuel Smiddy finished third in 16:28.42. Notably, all three times trailed Georgia's Jimmy Yoder, who clocked an outstanding 16:08.08 to win the 13-14 1500 free.
