South Dakota Sweeps Summit League Swim/Dive Weekly Honors, Tennessee Nearly Takes All SEC Awards

Though many college swimming and diving teams were idle last week preparing for this week’s various invitational meets, some athletes performed well enough to gain the attention of their respective conferences and earn some accolades as athletes of the week.

Atlantic 10 Conference

Male Swimmer of the Week: Daniel Camozzo, George Mason
Camozzo, a redshirt senior from Herndon, Va., won both the 100-yd butterfly (48.09) and the 200-yd butterfly (1:47.74) against A-10 conference foe, La Salle this past weekend. Camozzo also served as part of the winning 400-yd freestyle relay team (2:59.98).

Female Swimmer of the Week: Kelsey Jenkinson, La Salle
Jenkinson, a junior from Stellenbosch, South Africa, had another strong showing for the Explorers this past weekend as she took home first in the 100-yd breaststroke (1:05.53) and the 200-yd breaststroke (2:21.52) in a 168-132 victory over George Mason.

Male Rookie of the Week: Fabian Bergaman, La Salle
Bergman, a freshman from Stockholm, Sweden, won three individual races this past weekend including the 100-yd backstroke (50.82), the 200-yd backstroke (1:49.54) and the 200-yd individual medley (1:55.52), Bergman was also a part of the 200-yd medley relay team that captured first in 1:32.95.

Female Rookie of the Week: Dorothy Reilly, George Mason
Reilly, a freshman from Richmond, Va., won both the 200-yd backstroke (2:07.95) and the 200-yd butterfly (2:06.64) to help lead the Patriots.

Atlantic Coast Conference

Male Swimmer of the Week: Grigory Tarasevich, Louisville

Louisville’s Tarasevich, who earned ACC Male Swimmer of the Week honors, was sensational in the Cardinals dual-meet win over No. 11 Auburn and No. 14 Tennessee, finishing first in two individual events and one relay. The Omsk, Russia, native swept both backstroke events with 47.87 in the 100 back while swimming 1:43.77 in the 200 back, ranking first nationally in that event. Louisville claimed first place in the medley relay, with Tarasevich contributing a 22.61 split.

Female Swimmer of the Week: Courtney Bartholomew, Virginia

Virginia’s Bartholomew grabbed ACC Female Swimmer of the Week after a strong showing against conference foe, No. 22 NC State. The Holland, Michigan, native won the 200 back in an Aquatic and Fitness Center pool-record time of 1:54.31, the fastest time in the conference this season and third nationally. A race prior, Bartholomew tied the pool record in the 100 back in 52.58, the second-fastest time in the country.

Female Diver of the Week: Emma Gaboury, Notre Dame
Gaboury was named ACC Female Diver of the Week for her noteworthy weekend in the pool against Illinois. The Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, native won the 3-meter event with a score of 323.10 and finished second on the 1-meter with a career-high score of 300.07. Both scores were NCAA qualifying scores.

Big Ten Conference

Male Swimmer of the Week: Drew teDuits, Wisconsin

The 2013 NCAA champion in the 200 backstroke, teDuits won both backstroke events against Northwestern in times of 48.51 and 1:45.25. Both times would rank in the top 30 nationally, with the 200 back putting him 11th in the collegiate standings.

Female Swimmer of the Week: Ivy Martin, Wisconsin

Martin wins her second consecutive weekly honor after dominating the 100 free in the dual against Northwestern. She won that event in 49.55 after finishing second in the 200 free with a 1:49.85. Martin also helped the Badgers win both relays.

Male Diver of the Week: John Andrade, Northwestern
The senior qualified for the NCAA zone diving championships with his winning score of 323.48 on the 3-meter springboard in the dual meet against Wisconsin. He also placed third on the 1-meter with a 263.85.

Female Diver of the Week: Ashley Peterson, Wisconsin
Peterson was able to win both diving events in the dual meet against Northwestern, claiming the 1-meter with a score of 267.90 and the 3-meter event with a score of 296.70.

Male Freshman of the Week: Lachie McLeish, Michigan State
The freshman from Australia showed off his talents last week in the dual meet against Notre Dame, winning the 200 free with a 1:40.05 and the 100 free in 46.21.

Female Freshman of the Week: Sam Stratford, Illinois
The Canadian collected three runner-up finishes last week against Notre Dame in the 100 breast (1:04.51), 100 free (52.03) and 100 fly (57.17).

Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association

Male Swimmer of the Week: Richard Seffrin, New Jersey Institute of Technology
Seffrin posted a come-from-behind victory in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:43.33, a new pool record as the Highlanders won at Bryant College. He also had two third-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.37) and 200 IM (2:01.55). The 200 medley team which consisted of Seffrin and teammates Scott Quirie, Collin Moore and Brian Capozzola, came in second with a time of 1:38.99, good for a new NJIT school record.

Female Swimmer of the Week: Lily Tang, Campbell
Tang turned in season-best times in the 200 IM and the 200 free in Campbell’s loss to Old Dominion. She finished third overall in the 200 free with a 1:57.59, then posted a 2:08.39 in the 200 IM. Tang swam a 27.03 in the 50 backstroke, taking third, as well as led the 200 medley relay, helping the squad to a 1:50.92 second-place finish.

Conference USA

Female Swimmer of the Week: Danica Ross, Marshall
Ross produced the top times in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle to lead Marshall to a 160-138 triumph over the Bobcats. In her first race since February of 2013, the sophomore took the 50 freestyle at 23.80, the second fastest time in C-USA this season. The Binghamton, New York, native followed that by winning the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.68. Ross was also part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that placed first with a time of 1:36.83, just a hundredth of a second off the best time in the conference this year. The C-USA Swimmer of the Week award is the first of Ross’ career.

Horizon League

Male Swimmer of the Week: Nic Halverson, Milwaukee
Halverson led the Panthers in the water with three individual wins, two of which were back-to-back events. His first top-finish came in the 400 Individual Medley that the junior won with a time of 4:16.73. To start his back-to-back events, Halverson competed in the 100 backstroke for the first time this season and only second time in his career and won in a time of 55.15. Just moments later, he was back in the pool swimming the 500-Freestyle and touched the mat in a time of 4:53.84 to collect his third and final individual win of the dual meet.

Female Swimmer of the Week: Flavia Segatto, Valparaiso
Segatto claimed victory in six events throughout the two dual meets with four individual wins and two as a member of winning relays. Versus Rose-Hulman, the senior won the 100-Butterfly in a time of 1:02.03 and swam the opening legs of the winning 200-Medley Relay and 400-Freestyle Relay. On Saturday, Segatto took the top of the podium in the 1000-Freestyle with a time of 11:03.11, 200-Butterfly clocking in at 2:16.24 and the 200-Individual Medley in a time of 2:17.38.

Mid-American Conference

Male Swimmer of the Week: Jordan Lesser, Eastern Michigan
The Eastern Michigan University redshirt-junior won two diving events and finished second behind teammate Alex Chan in another in the Eagles’ 191-109 victory over the University of Cincinnati, Nov. 15. Lesser started out his day with a record-breaking performance, winning the platform dive with a new EMU standard of 395.85 points. Lesser outperformed his competition by a landslide, with a 171-point margin of victory. He went on to win the 3-meter dive in a close contest with Chan, but eventually came out on top after scoring an 8/8.5 on a forward 2.5 somersault. Finally, Lesser finished runner-up in the 1-meter dive with 329.85 points, less than four points behind Chan.

Female Swimmer of the Week: Addison Ferguson, Ohio
Ferguson continues to be a top force for the Bobcats through the 2014-2015 season. This past weekend, she brought in three wins for the ‘Cats in their dual meet with Marshall University: she won the 100 backstroke (56.92), the 200 backstroke (2:05.02), and the 100 butterfly (58.16), as well as having been the backstroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay quartet (1:45.15). Having qualified to NCAA as a sophomore and continuing to be a strong swimmer her following season, Ferguson is a swimmer to not only keep an eye on for this season, but for her senior season (2015-2016) as well.

Missouri Valley Conference

Female Swimmer of the Week: Cecilia Holmes, Illinois State
Holmes played a key role in Illinois State’s victory over conference foe Northern Iowa, 190.50-108.50. Three individual victories were recorded by Holmes: the 1000-yard freestyle (10:37.07), the 200-yard IM (2:12.47) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.47). Her 200-yard IM and 200-yard breaststroke were both season-best times.

Female Diver of the Week: Wenting Zhang, Illinois State
Zhang came out on top in both the 1-meter (324.67) and 3-meter (356.48) diving competitions Saturday at the Glen F. Henry Swimming & Diving Pool. She set pool records in both events.

Presidents Athletic League

Male Swimmer of the Week: Nicolas Smith, Westminster College
Smith won the 1000 free (10:29.73), the 200 fly (1:59.04) and the 400 IM (4:20.81) in Saturday’s 171-117 win over Wooster.

Female Swimmer of the Week: Megan Smith, Grove City College
Smith earned three wins in Grove City’s 155-139 triumph over Division II Wheeling Jesuit. She won the 1000 in a time of 10 minutes, 51.44 seconds. Smith then took the 500 in 5:17.85 and recorded a winning time of 4:46.47 in the 400 individual medley. Smith currently holds the top time in each event among PAC competitors.

Southeastern Conference

Male Swimmer of the Week: Joe Patching, Auburn
Patching swam the second-fastest time in the country in the 200 IM (1:46.60) and posted the third-best time in the 200 back (1:44.02) this season against No. 14 Tennessee and No. 5 Louisville. He won the 200 free with a season-best time of 1:37.16 against the Vols and Cardinals. Patching remains undefeated in the 200 free and 200 IM this season.

Female Swimmer of the Week: Molly Hannis, Tennessee

Hannis touched the wall first in the 100 breast (1:00.31) and the 200 breast (2:10.23) and swam the second leg of the winning 200 medley relay (1:38.94) as Tennessee tied No. 7 Auburn and defeated No. 18 Louisville. She also requested to swim in the 200 IM for the first time this season, taking second place with a time of 2:02.19 to help her squad with the win and the tie on the day.

Male Diver of the Week: Mauricio Robles, Tennessee
In Tennessee’s meet against No. 5 Louisville and No. 11 Auburn, Robles finished first in the 1-meter with a score of 360.85 and took second place in the 3-meter with a final score of 406.05. In his last three outings on the 3-meter, he has broken the 400-point mark.

Female Diver of the Week: Alex Bettridge, LSU
Bettridge swept both springboard events for the second straight week, with season-high scores of 318.80 on the one-meter and 335.48 on the three-meter in LSU’s victory over Incarnate Word. The senior notched her fourth and fifth wins on the year and has not finished lower than second all year.

Male Freshman of the Week: Sam McHugh, Tennessee

In Tennessee’s meet against No. 5 Louisville and No. 11 Auburn, McHugh won the 200-yard butterfly (1:45.82) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:26.73). He also took third place in the 200-yard IM (1:48.27) and saw the first leg of the sixth-place 200-yard medley relay (23.23). McHugh now has 10 wins this season.

Female Freshman of the Week: Micah Bohon, Tennessee
With Tennessee needing first and third place to tie Auburn, Bohon swam her first-ever 50 free split (23.45) to help the B relay team in the 200 free relay take third place as the Vols tied the Tigers, 150-150. Bohon also placed seventh in the 200 breast (2:20.34), eighth in the 100 breast (1:05.39) and 10th in the 200 IM (2:05.34).

Summit League

Male Swimmer of the Week: Jacob Knowles, South Dakota
Knowles earns his second career Swimmer of the Week honor and first of the season after posting a trio of top-four finishes at the Border Battle, including an event win. The Lockport, Ill., native won the 200 breast with a time of 2:13.19, while finishing runner up in the 100 breast (1:00.47). He also placed fourth in the 50 free (22.18).

Female Swimmer of the Week: Sam Schutt, South Dakota
Schutt claims her second-straight Swimmer of the Week award and fifth of her career after recording three first-place finishes. She clocked a league-best and winning time of 5:01.55 in the 500 free, while winning the 200 free in 1:54.38 and the 200 back in 2:09.18.

Male Diver of the Week: Dustin Gens, South Dakota
Gens earns his third career Diver of the Week award and first of the season after sweeping the diving events at the Border Battle. The junior won the one-meter dive with a score of 275.20 and the three-meter with 303.90 points, both rank fourth-best in the league this season.

Female Diver of the Week: Greysen Hertting, South Dakota
Hertting collects Diver of the Week honors for the second-straight week and 15th time of her career after winning both diving events at the Border Battle. The sophomore won the one-meter dive with a league-best and NCAA Zone qualifying score of 281.20. She also finished first in the three-meter with 280.10 points.

Western Athletic Conference

Female Swimmer of the Week: Carleigh Barrett, Northern Colorado
Barrett, a sophomore from Oshawa, Ontario (R.S. McLaughlin) continued her successful season picking up victories in the 200 freestyle (1:58.23) and the 200 butterfly (2:08.85). Barrett also helped the Bears win the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:37.99 against Colorado Mesa and Colorado School of Mines.

Female Diver of the Week: Sarah Meadows, Northern Colorado
Meadows, a freshman from Burnet, Texas (Burnet HS) took home first place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter in Colorado this weekend. In the 1-meter Meadows scored a 274.88 and a 249.30 in the 3-meter competition.
