South Carolina 3A, 4A High School State Championships

COLUMBIA/CLEMSON, South Carolina, October 11. THE 2009-10 High School State Championships began this weekend in South Carolina.

Team Scores
With a score of 350 points, the Mauldin girls walked away with the state title at the 4A meet. Spartanburg took second (333) and Dorman placed third (287). The Wando boys won with 343 points, followed by Lexington (303.5) and Spring Valley (284).

Riverside and J.L. Mann went head-to-head at the 3A meet. Riverside captured first-place for the girl’s (484.5) and boy’s (448) teams while J.L. Mann finished second with scores of 473 and 420.5, respectively. The Hilton Head girls (416) and the Academic Magnet boys took third (231).

4A Results
The Dorman girls won two of three relays. Ariane Nguyenduy, Lauryl Williams, Tori Angermeier, and Laura Wilkes clocked a time of 1:51.14 in the 200 medley relay. Williams broke the 24-second barrier in the individual 50 freestyle with a time of 23.93. She also set a meet record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.20. The previous record (1:05.63) was set last year by Christine Hughes of DW Daniel.

Senior Samantha Kluttz (James Island) had individual wins in the 200 (1:56.11) and 500 (5:11.43) freestyles.

Costa Jennings teamed up with Nguyenduy, Angermeier, and Williams for a win in the 200 freestyle relay. The group set a meet record with a time of 1:40.08.

Spartanburg’s Chrissy Oberg finished first in the 100 butterfly (58.57) and the 100 backstroke (57.96).

Jessica Mason, Elizabeth Simon, Liz Mooney, and Morgan Brooks (Mauldin) had a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:38.53.

On the boy’s side, Fort Mill took first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.61. Al Lim, Sam Buskirk, Alex Huffman, and Kyle Patterson contributed to the win.

Stratrord’s Bjoer Hornikel had individual wins in the 50 (21.13) and 100 freestyles. He set a meet record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.96. The previous record (46.47) was set by S. Turner of T.L. Hanna in 2000.

Evan Ashcraft (Nation Ford) finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.97. He teamed up with Brian Peterson, Seth Greene, and Jake Irmiter for wins in the 200 (1:28.37) and 400 (3:13.77) freestyle relays.

3A Results
J.L. Mann’s Annie Gillig, Monici Milici, Sara Beth Drake, and April Serieno won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:50.84. Gillig also had first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (57.74) and the 200 IM. She set a record in the 200 IM by merely .03 seconds (2:07.20). The previous record was set by K. Quinn of Lancaster in 2000.

Nicole Menzel (Hilton Head) won the 200 and 500 freestyles with times of 1:52.97 and 4:59.88, respectively. She teamed up with Fallon Kelley, Josephine Cuda, and Cassandra Ley for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.22). Kelley also won the individual 50 freestyle (25.24).

J.L. Manna bested a 15-year-old state record in the 400 freestyle relay. Jamie Osborn, Drake, Keelin McNamara, and Gillig clocked a time of 3:36.89 for the win. The previous record was set by Irmo in 1994.

Robert Borowicz, Wyatt Boliek, Walker Hogan, and Chandler Watts (J.L. Mann) took first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:39.95. Boliek also won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.09) and the 200 IM (2:00.45).

Charlie Bolgan of Hilton Head had individual wins in the 200 (1:47.23) and 500 (4:47.15) freestyles.

Riverside won two of three relays. Trey Lee, Michael Knotts, Andrew Delahunty, and Matt Anderson won the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:30.75.

Steven Layne of Chapin finished first in the 100 backstroke (53.27) and the 100 butterfly (52.53).

Knotts and Anderson teamed up with Brian Chou and Michael Dematos in the 400 freestyle relay. The group clocked a time of 3:22.18.
