South African Swimmers Among the Medals in Barcelona

BARCELONA, Spain, June 7. CAMERON van der Burgh joins Gerhard Zandberg, Wendy Trott and Roland Schoeman among the medals, as the SA swim team stepped up their world championship preparations at the Mare Nostrum gala in Barcelona on Saturday.

Van der Burgh clocked 1 min 01,01 secs to finish second in the 100 metres breaststroke, Zandberg took silver in the 50 metres backstroke in 25.67. Trott, who is based at the University of Georgia in the US, collected a silver medal in the 800 metres freestyle in 8:32.93.

Schoeman made it on the medal podium to collect the bronze medal in the 50 metres butterfly in 23.63.

Lyndon Ferns, who along with Schoeman, was a part of the gold medal-winning 4 x 100 metres freestyle relay team at the Athens Olympics in 2004, withdrew from the national team shortly before departure on Thursday, due to a sinus problem.

SA's US-based breaststroke swimmer Neil Versfeld is hoping to join the team in Europe soon, after a visa matter prevented him from traveling to compete in Barcelona.
