South African Sports Minister Irate Over Medal Ceremony at All Africa Games

ALGIERS, Algeria, July 15. SOUTH African Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile walked out of a medal ceremony at the All Africa Games yesterday after the national anthem played was the rendition that existed during the apartheid era, according to a report by SABC News. Stofile called the decision by organizers to play that version of the anthem an insult to the country.

"That was not the South African national anthem, that was 'Die Stem' of the apartheid era and there is no way I can stand in front of our flag whilst they sing the stem," Stofile was quoted as saying by SABC News. "It's a big insult to the country of South Africa. We can't fight for so many years against that song and have it sung at our championship."
