The Arizona State swimming program will add a jack-of-all-trades swimmer to their roster in 2016, with a verbal commitment from South African Marlies Ross to join the squad.

Ross confirmed the decision to Swimming World, but did not give details on when she would arrive on campus. It is likely Ross could be on the team as early as January for the spring semester, just in time to compete at the Pac 12 championships and possibly the NCAA championships.

Ross has won medals in practically every stroke and distance at the South African nationals. She recently won the 100 and 200 IM in July’s short course nationals and was on the medal podium in butterfly, backstroke and freestyle events. She earned a silver in the 200 free, silver in the 200 IM and bronze in the 400 free at the recent All-Africa Games.

Ross qualified for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the 200 individual medley, where she was ninth with a 2:15.17. The time converts to a sub-2:00 200-yard IM, which could score at the Pac 12 meet and would put her on the bubble for qualifying for the NCAA championships. Ross will also be a valuable player for the Sun Devil relays, as she also swam on all three relays for South Africa at the Commonwealth Games.

More and more swimmers from South Africa will start doing this……not just in swimming but other sports, athletes left, gave up citizenship as there was no way they would ever be selected. These athletes now plays for other countries against their home team – the Springboks. South Africa is going to become a pot of gold for international teams as there is so much talent here but it gets neglected due to everything else but sport.
