Sioui Concludes Speedo Western Canadian Nationals With 11 Gold Medals

REGINA, Canada, February 19. ADAM Sioui of Calgary completed a dominating performance at the Speedo Western Nationals swimming championships on Sunday with three more individual wins and a relay victory as well to conclude the competition with a remarkable 11 gold medals

The 24-year-old veteran, won the 50-meter backstroke, 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle races on Sunday and helped the University of Calgary to victory in the 4X100 medley relay. This week he also won the 100 freestyle, 200 butterfly, 50 butterfly, 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke along with relay wins in the 4X200 and 4X100 freestyles.

It was also a productive weekend for Mike Brown of Calgary, one of Canada's top medal contenders for next month's world championships. Brown earned four gold medals completing a men's breaststroke sweep with a win in the 100-meter race on Sunday. He also won the 50 and 200 breaststrokes and the 200 individual medley.

Ryan Cochrane of Victoria, also on the world team, took the men's 1,500 freestyle for his third gold. He also won the 400 and 800 freestyles. Also on Sunday, Willem Hergesheimer of Langley, B.C., took the 400 IM.

In women's competition, world team member Erica Morningstar of Calgary, Jillian Tyler of Calgary and Savannah King of Vancouver all collected a third individual gold. Morningstar, who broke her Canadian record in the 100 freestyle Saturday, captured the 200-meter race to complete a sweep of the freestyle sprint events.

Tyler claimed the three breaststroke races, including the 100-meter race on Sunday. King was the distance freestyle Queen with wins in the 1,500, 400 and Sunday's 800 event.

Other winners in women's competition Sunday were Brenna MacLean of West Vancouver in the 50 backstroke and Melanie Dodds of Langley in the 400 IM. Dodds also won the 200 IM this weekend.
