Siobhan Haughey Through As Top Seed In 100 Free At Asian Games; Tomoru Honda & Daiya Seto Book Centre Lanes In 400IM

Siobhan Haughey returned the morning after her 200 free triumph to set the pace in the 100 prelims at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

The double Olympic silver medallist split 25.64/28.63 to book lane four in 54.27 ahead of Chinese swimmer Yang Junxuan (54.52), the duo the only women inside 55secs.

Haughey set a Games record of 1:54.12 over 200 and split 51.92 as part of the Hong Kong quartet that took bronze in the 4×100 freestyle relay.

Li Bingjie – second behind Haughey in the 200 – eased into the 400 final, the Olympic bronze medallist clocking 4:13.10 to qualify third.

Teammate Ma Yonghui will be in lane four after going 4:09.76 with Japan’s Waka Kobori alongside (4:10.27).

Japanese pair Tomoru Honda and Daiya Seto were the top two through to the 400IM final with each saying they want to beat the other and claim Japan’s first gold medal.

Honda – the Olympic 200 fly silver medallist – went 4:16.60 for top spot with Seto – the three-time world champion and Rio bronze medallist – set to eyeball his teammate from lane five in 4:19.69.

World bronze medallist Peng Xuwei heads the women’s 200 back  in 2:09.67 while China led the men’s 4×1 medley relay in 3:34.80 and will be able to draft in the likes of Xu Jiayu, Qin Haiyang and Pan Zhanle.

Japan and Korea are next through with India progressing fourth with a national record of 3:40.84.
