Two coaches have recently been placed on the USA Swimming permanent banned list: Shannon Foster and John “Jay” Smith.

Foster, a swim coach in North Carolina, was added to USA Swimming’s banned list after police say she knew fellow coach Nathan Weddle, already banned, was sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl, according to the News and Observer.

Weddle was charged with six felony counts of statutory sex offense with a child under the age of 15 and seven more felony counts of indecent liberties with a child, according to multiple news outlets. On March 13, Foster was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile for allowing a 14-year-old girl to be alone with someone she knew was abusing the child.

In a search warrant made public Wednesday, police say Foster, 44, knew that her boyfriend sexually assaulted a teen swimmer, the News and Observer reported. Instead of sharing that information with authorities, Foster called the 14-year-old swimmer and told the child she had “ruined her relationship” with Weddle, 43, and demanded that she stay away from him.

Weddle, along with James Cutrone and Christian Valcarce, were permanently banned by USA Swimming as of January.

Meanwhile, Smith was banned after he began to face legal charges for sexual imposition, disorderly conduct and phone threats. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Smith, a former coach of the WTRC Sharks, is said to have had a one-on-one practice with the minor victim on Feb. 16 and “asked the minor victim to meet him in the equipment room so he could stretch her out,” a statement of facts filed in Kettering Municipal Court read, according to the Dayton Daily News.

According to court documents, Smith pulled out baby oil and “rubbed the minor victim underneath the bathing suit and rubbed the minor victim’s butt and back.” Court records indicated “he also rubbed the minor victim in the front.”
