Severna High School, Fallston High School Win Titles at First-Ever Maryland 3A/4A Championship

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, March 9. SEVERNA Park High School and Fallston High School won state titles for the women and men, respectively, at the first Maryland 3A/4A State Championship.

Severna Park paced the women's competition field with 330.5 points. East Roosevelt scored 281 points and placed second while Fallston took the third-place spot with 202 points.

Severna Park kicked off the meet with a one-two finish in the 200 freestyle. Jordan Gibbs won the event in 1:58.24 while her teammate, Ezra Seniz, followed close behind taking second place with a 2:00.83 time.

Gibbs and Seniz seized the top two spots in the 500 freestyle as well. Gibbs smoked the field with a 5:08.51 time while Seniz swam a second-place time of 5:24.00.

Sarah Lloyd compiled two more individual titles for Severna Park. Lloyd swam the only sub-minute 100 butterfly with a 58.36 and edged the field in the 100 backstroke with a 1:01.69 time.

The Severna Park foursome of Kiki Wasserman, Katherine Kline, Gibbs and Emily Lloyd outswam the 200 freestyle relay competition with a 1:43.40 time. Severna Park's contingent of Sarah Lloyd, Seniz, Gibbs and Emily Lloyd earned the state title in the 400 freestyle relay winning in 3:48.49.

Fallston compiled 323 points throughout the course of the meet on their way to capturing the men's team title. Thomas Johnson scored 225 points and placed second while South River came in third place with 185 points.

Fallston used the grouping of Nick Tomechko, Jack Gottschalk, Bradley Huppenthal and Nick Sakell to edge the 200 medley relay field with a winning time of 1:45.14. David Zablocki, Paul Zoli, Gottschalk and Sakell won a second relay title for Fallston with a 3:23.67 time.

Tyler Henderson of Thomas Johnson picked up two individual wins as he bested his competition in the 100 butterfly (54.82) and the 100 backstroke (56.35).

Gottschalk dominated the male sprinters as he won both the 50 (22.96) and the 100 freestyle (49.95) events.

Justin Vagts of South River placed first in the other two freestyle events taking first in the 500 freestyle (4:43.13) and the 200 freestyle (1:45.89).
