SEC Weekly Recap: Georgia Sweeps Georgia Tech

Rivalry week opened in the SEC with an inter-conference showdown in Atlanta.

The Georgia Bulldogs swept rival Georgia Tech on Wednesday in convincing fashion.

The No. 7 Bulldogs outscored the Yellow Jackets 187.5-110.5 in the men’s meet, while the No. 8 Georgia women won189-109 as both teams improved to 3-0.

Gunnar Bentz led the Bulldogs with three individual victories, winning the 200-yard individual medley (1:48.39), the 100 butterfly (48.11) and the 200 butterfly (1:45.93).

Chase Kalisz won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events in 53.85 and 1:55.69, respectively. Javier Acevedo won the 50 freestyle in 20.69 and the 200 backstroke (1:47.36).

Pace Clark, the reigning SEC Swimmer of the Week, the 500 freestyle in 4:31.28. Jay Litherland won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:12.69 and Taylor Dale won the 100 backstroke (47.74).

In diving, Ian Forlini claimed the top spot on the 3-meter, posting a score of 367.88, while Charlie Clifton won the 1-meter with a score of 339.53.

In the women’s meet, Megan Kingsley won the 200 butterfly (1:56.57) and 200 backstroke (1:59.44). Meryn McCann won the 500 freestyle (4:50.41) and 1,000 freestyle (10:04.61).

Meaghan Raab, the SEC Female Swimmer of the Week, continued her success by winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.72. Olivia Smoliga won the 50 freestyle in 23.09 and Chantal Van Landeghem won the 100 freestyle (49.67).

Emily Cameron won the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.01, while Chelsea Britt won the 100 butterfly in 54.72. Katherine Parker won the 100 backstroke (55.98) and Veronica Burchill won the 200 individual medley in 2:04.29.

Madison Duvall posted a 342.00 to win the 3-meter dive and SEC Diver of the Week McKensi Austin took the top spot on the 1-meter with a score of 289.65.

Florida women top Arkansas

After losing a handful of close dual meets, the No. 18 Florida women earned an important SEC victory, beating Arkansas 118-112.

Both teams are 1-1 in the SEC. Florida improved to 2-5 in dual meets.

The Gators used a balanced attack to win 11 events with eight swimmers teaming to win nine individual events.

Amelia Maughan was the lone double winner for the Gators, winning the 100 free (51.71) and 200 free (1:49.79). Sherridon Dressel won the 50 freestyle in 23.69 and Autumn Finke won the 1,000 free in 9:54.24.

Emma Ball won the 100 back at 54.40, an NCAA B-standard time, and Sydney Sell earned her first win of the season in the 200 back at 1:59.59.

Freshmen Savanna Faulconer won the 200 breast in a B-standard time of 2:15.67 and Kay Sargent won the 200 IM in 2:03.79.

Alyssa Yambor-Maul won the 200 fly in a B-standard time of 1:59.43.

Auburn sweeps Alabama

Rivalry week continued with Auburn facing Alabama. The Tigers continued their strong season with the women dominating the Crimson Tide 225-74 and the No. 10 Auburn men winning 166-134 over No. 5 Alabama.

Joe Patching won the 200 back for the fourth straight meet, touching in 1:43.53. He also won the 200 IM (1:47.34).

Michael Duderstadt won the 100 breaststroke in 53.86 and the 200 in 1:59.94.

Luis Martinez won the 100 butterfly in 47.35 and the 200 butterfly in 1:47.22.

The Crimson Tide swept the freestyle events.

Alabama’s Daniel Kober won the 1,000 freestyle in 9:17.40, holding off Auburn’s Grant Schenk by nine-hundredths of a second. Laurent Bams won the 200 freestyle (1:36.09) and the 100 freestyle with a 43.87. Connor Oslin won the 100 backstroke (47.37). Will Freeman won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:29.02.

Alabama closed out the meet with a win the 400 freestyle relay when Zane Waddell, Robert Howard, Luke Kaliszak and Bams clocked a 2:55.12, the fastest time in the nation this season.

In the women’s meet, Auburn’s Julie Meynen won the 100 freestyle 49.44 and the 50 free (22.74).

Alison Maillard, who was named SEC Freshman of the Week, won both the 1-meter (273.75) and 3-meter (311.93) diving events.

Ashley Neidigh, Natasha Lloyd and Aly Tetzloff each had multiple wins for the Tigers. Neidigh won the 500 (4:48.36) and 1,000 free (9:45.74) while Lloyd won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.58 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:14.87. Tetzloff won the 100 fly (53.28) and the 100 back (54.61).

Alabama’s Mia Nonnenberg won the 200 individual medley (2:01.73).

South Carolina tops Arkansas for coach’s milestone

The University of South Carolina women’s swimming and diving program defeated Arkansas 177-123 on Friday to give coach McGee Moody his 100th victory at South Carolina.

The Carolina women collected a total of 11 event victories. Emma Barksdale earned three wins for the Gamecocks in the 1,000-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle and the 400-yard IM. Emily Cornell won the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke.

Texas swims past Texas A&M

No. 7 Texas (5-0) claimed 14 of 16 events and put away a 166.5-128.5 victory over No. 14 Texas A&M Thursday.

Texas sophomore Joanna Evans, who represented The Bahamas in Rio, led from start-to-finish in the 1,000 freestyle and was victorious at 9:52.34. Madisyn Cox led a one-two Texas finish atop the 200 freestyle and claimed the victory with a NCAA “B” cut of 1:45.96 while sophomore Nora McCullah took second at 1:47.88.

Tasija Karosas paced a one-two Longhorns showing in the 100 backstroke, where she edged teammate Claire Adams at 53.70. Karosas’ mark and Adams’ time of 53.73 were good for NCAA provisional-qualifying cuts.  Sophomore Olivia Anderson added an NCAA provisional cut and another win for the Longhorns with her mark of 1:01.38 in the 100 breaststroke.

Grabbing first-place finishes for the Aggies were juniors Lisa Bratton and Beryl Gastaldello, who touched first in the 200-yard backstroke and the 100 butterfly, respectively. Bratton reached the wall in 1:55.82, while Gastaldello finished in 53.70.

Florida splits with Texas A&M

The No. 8 Florida Gators defeated the Aggies 159-141 in the men’s meet, while the 18th-ranked Gator women fell to the 14th-ranked Aggies 171-124.

The Florida men took nine of the 16 events in the meet. Caeleb Dressel earned titles in the 50 free (19.68), 200 free (1:35.99) and 200 IM (1:46.17), and all of his times qualified as NCAA B-standard.

Mitch D’Arrigo won the 500 free (4:28.44) and 1,000 free (9:08.90). Jan Switkowski also won two titles – one individual in the 100 free with a B-standard 44.25 time and another as a part of the 400 free relay team.

Sarah Gibson won the 1,000 free in 9:49.15, and then posted NCAA “B” cuts of 53.68 in the 100 fly and 1:57.59 in the 200 fly for the Aggies.

Georgia sweeps Wisconsin

The Georgia women defeated Wisconsin 204.5-143.5 and the men won 202-146 for a Bulldog sweep.

Olivia Smoliga won the 100 backstroke in 54.03 and the 100 freestyle (48.47). Meaghan Raab won the 200 freestyle (1:46.17).

Stephanie Peters won the 1,000 freestyle in 9:44.57, while Chelsea Britt won the 200 butterfly in 1:59.64.

SEC Diver of the Week McKensi Austin won the 3-meter springboard, posting a score of 302.78.

On the men’s side, Chase Kalisz continued his streak of dominance in the 100 breaststroke, winning the event in 55.11. The Olympian also took the win in the 400 individual medley by posting the fastest time of the year in the event (3:41.49).

Jay Litherland took the top spot in the 200 freestyle in 1:36.47 and Taylor Dale won the 100 backstroke in 48.03. SEC Male Swimmer of the Week Pace Clark remained undefeated on the season in the 200 butterfly, taking the top spot in the event in 1:46.10. Gunnar Bentz won the 200 breaststroke (2:03.54).

Missouri sweeps quad with Kentucky

The Mizzou men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both picked up three dual wins apiece Saturday morning as the Tigers concluded a two-day quad meet with Kentucky, Northwestern and Southern Illinois in Lexington, Ky.

The No. 17 Mizzou women picked up wins over Kentucky (199-152), Northwestern (233-95) and Southern Illinois (263-118), while the No. 20 men also notched victories over Kentucky (202-170), Northwestern (273.5-98.5) and Southern Illinois (286-83).

Senior Michael Chadwick won three events during the meet, including two victories on Saturday. Also double winners over the two days were seniors Katharine Ross and Fabian and junior Hannah Stevens.
