SEC Day 2 Prelims: Smoliga, Dressel Take Top Spots in 50 Free

Here is what happened on Day 2 of the SEC Championships during prelims.

Women’s 50 freestyle

Georgia’s Olivia Smoliga took the top seed in the 50 freestyle finishing in 21.82, ahead of teammate Chantal Van Landeghem and Tennessee’s Madeline Banic, who each finished in 22.00 to tie for the second seed.

Alabama’s Bailey Scott was fourth (22.21), followed by Tennessee’s Kira Toussaint (22.24), Texas A&M’s Beryl Gastaldello (22.32), LSU’s Leah Troskot (22.39) and LSU’s Haylee Knight (22.43).

Men’s 50 freestyle

After an astonishing 17.9 relay split in the 50 freestyle on Tuesday in the 200 IM, Florida’s Caeleb Dressel followed that up with a swim of 18.51 in the 50 freestyle prelims.

Texas A&M’s Cory Bolleter was second (19.04), followed by Tennessee’s Kyle Decoursey (19.21), Alabama’s Zane Waddell (19.35), Missouri’s Michael Chadwick (19.41), Auburn’s Peter Holoda (19.50), and Florida’s Enzo Martinez Scarpe and Auburn’s Zach Apple, who tied for seventh at 19.59.

Women’s 500 freestyle

Texas A&M’s Sarah Gibson took the top seed in the women’s 500 freestyle, finishing ahead of Auburn’s Ashley Neidigh (4:4136) and A&M teammate Sycerika McMahon (4:42.47).

Rounding out the rest of the final spots were Missouri’s Kira Zubar (4:43.00), Kentucy’s Kendal Casey (4:43.05), Kentucky’s Geena Freriks (4:43.47), Georgia’s Rachel Zilinskas (4:43.72) and Arkansas’ Ayumi Macias (4:43.89).

Women’s 200 IM

In the 200 IM, Tennessee’s Meghan Small took the top seed in 1:54.86, finishing ahead of a quartet of Aggies — Sydney Pickrem (1:55.23), Lisa Bratton (1:56.23), Monika Gonzalez-Hermosillo (1:56.60) and Bethany Galat (1:56.69).

Kentucky’s Asia Seidt followed in sixth (1:56.70), ahead of South Carolina’s Emma Barksdale (1:56.84) and Georgia’s Meaghan Raab (1:57.37).

Men’s 500 freestyle

In the men’s 500 freestyle, Florida’s Mitch D’Arrigo took the top seed in 4:12.43, followed by the South Carolina duo of Fynn Minuth (4:12.94) and Akaram Mahmoud (4:14.34).

Rounding out the rest of the finals field the Georgia duo of Walker Higgins (4:14.43) and Jay Litherland (4:17.23), in fourth and fifth, respectively. Florida’s Ben Lawless followed in 4:17.28, then Georgia’s Kevin Litherland (4:18.16) and Kentucky’s Isaac Jones (4:18.59) — leaving Florida’s Maxime Rooney in ninth (4:18.66).

Men’s 200 IM

In the 200 IM, Georgia’s Chase Kalisz took the top seed in 1:42.84, followed by Florida’s Mark Szaranek (1:43.00), Auburn’s Joe Patching (1:43.32) and Georgia’s Gunnar Bentz (1:44.24).

Rounding out the bottom half of the finals are Florida’s Jan Switkowski (1:44.24), Alabama’s Ashton McKee (1:44.47), Auburn’s Michael Duderstadt (1:44.80) and Florida’s Alex Lebed (1:44.86).
