SEC Championships Day 2 Finals: Gibson, Kalisz, Dressel Earn Wins

Here is what happened in the finals of Day 2 of the SEC Championships.

Women’s 500 freestyle

Texas A&M’s Sarah Gibson won the 500-yard freestyle on Wednesday, finishing in 4:38.92. Gibson held off Auburn’s Ashley Neidigh (4:39.91) by a second.

Kentucky’s Kendal Casey was third (4:40.81), followed by teammate Geena Freriks (4:40.85), Georgia’s Rachel Zilinskas (4:42.22), Missouri’s Kira Zubar (4:42.79), Arkansas’ Ayumi Macias (4:43.28) and A&M’s Sycerika McMahon (4:46.38).

Men’s 500 freestyle

South Carolina’s Fynn Minuth surged to the SEC title in the 500 freestyle, finishing in a pool-record 4:11.07.

Florida’s Mitch D’Arrigo, the top seed from the morning prelims, finished second in 4:12.71, followed by Georgia’s Kevin Litherland (4:15.98), Jay Litherland (4:16.41) and Walker Higgins (4:16.54). Florida’s Ben Lawless was sixth (4:16.94), followed by Kentucky’s Isaac Jones (4:17.52) and South Carolina’s Akaram Mahmoud (4:17.57).

Women’s 200 IM

Tennessee freshman Meghan Small won the 200 IM in a pool-record 1:53.31, followed by Texas A&M’s Sydney Pickrem (1:53.64) and Bethany Galat (1:54.86).

Kentucky’s Asia Seidt took fourth (1:55.02), followed by Texas A&M’s Lisa Bratton (1:56.30) and Monika Gonzalez-Hermosillo (1:56.50), South Carolina’s Emma Barksdale (1:56.65) and Georgia’s Meaghan Raab (1:59.44).

Men’s 200 IM

Georgia’s Chase Kalisz won the 200 IM in 1:42.84, to hold off Florida’s Mark Szaranek (1:43.00).

Auburn’s Joe Patching was third (1:43.32), followed by Georgia’s Gunnar Bentz (1:44.24), Florida’s Joe Switkowski (1:44), Alabama’s Anton McKee (1:44.47), Auburn’s Michael Duderstadt (1:44.80) and Florida’s Alex Lebed (1:44.86).

Women’s 50 free

Tennessee’s Madeline Banic edged Georgia’s Olivia Smoliga to win the 50 freestyle. Banic finished in 21.54, just two hundredths of a second ahead of Smoliga (21.56).

Alabama’s Bailey Scott was third (21.84). followed by Texas A&M’s Beryl Gastaldello (21.95), Georgia’s Chantal Van Landeghem (22.07), Tennessee’s Kira Toussaint (22.22), LSU’s Haylee Knight (22.28) and LSU’s Leah Troskot (22.37).

Men’s 50 free

Florida’s Caeleb Dressel continued his fast start, winning the 50 freestyle in 18.46, a pool record at Tennessee.

Alabama’s Zane Waddell took second (19.17), followed by Missouri’s Michael Chadwick (19.21), Texas A&M’s Cory Bolleter (19.22), Auburn’s Zach Apple (19.23), Tennessee’s Kyle Decoursey (19.25), Auburn’s Peter Holoda (19.43) and Florida’s Enzo Martinez Scarpe (19.67).

Women’s 1-meter diving

Missouri’s Lauren Reedy won 1-meter diving with a score of 364.30, beating the previous pool record.

Kentucky’s Rebecca Hamperian was second (354.9), followed by South Carolina’s Julia Vincent (351.85), LSU’s Lizzie Cui (336.10), Georgia’s Olivia Ball (327.75), Auburn’s Maddie Cox (313.95), Missouri’s Kendra Kieser (313.60) and South Carolina’s Mikaela Lujan (307.90).

Women’s 200 free relay

Georgia’s Olivia Smoliga, Veronica Burchill, Emily Cameron and Chantal Van Landeghem won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:27.57 to close the night for the women’s events.

Auburn’s Aly Tetzloff, Ashton Ellzey, Julie Meynen and Allyx Purcell took second at 1:27.86. Tennessee’s Kira Toussaint, Erika Brown, Meghan Small and Madeline Banic finished third in 1:27.86.

Texas A&M was fourth (1:28.85), followed by LSU (1:29.2), Alabama (1:29.28), Missouri (1:30.03) and Florida (1:30.98).

Men’s 200 free relay

Florida continued to dominate the sprints, winning the 200 free relay. Enzo Martinez Scarpe, Caeleb Dressel, Jan Switkowski and Jack Blyzinskkyj finished in 1:15.67 to break the pool record.

Auburn’s Zach Apple, Peter Holodo, Ziv Kalontarov and Kyle Darmody took second (116.03).

Alabama’s Zane Waddell, Luke Kaliszak, Robert Howard and Laurent Bams took third at 1:16.40.

Missouri was fourth (1:17.45), followed by Texas A&M (1:17.52), Tennessee (1:17.64), South Carolina (1:18.69) and Georgia (1:18.88).

Men’s team scores

Florida leads the men’s meet after Day 2 with 486.5 points. Auburn is second (346), followed by Texas A&M (324), Georgia (314), Alabama (287), South Carolina (278), Tennessee (261.5), LSU (199), Kentucky (196) and Missouri (186).

Women’s team scores

Texas A&M leads the women’s meet after Day 2 with 488 points, followed by Georgia (410), Auburn (371), Missouri (349), Tennessee (344), Kentucky (310), Florida (238), LSU (231), South Carolina (203), Alabama (187), Arkansas (133) and Vanderbilt (30).
