FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 14. DURING prelims today at the Speedo Champions Series in Federal Way, Wash., Scottsdale's Ryan Hoffer took down a 13-14 U.S. National Age Group record in the men's 100-yard free.

Hoffer, 14, raced to a time of 45.10 to qualify sixth into finals, behind 20-year-old teammate Tyler Messerschmidt's meet-record 43.11. Hoffer's time beat the previous record of 45.21 set by Edward Kim in 2010. Hoffer's previous best time had been a 45.79 from the 2012 GU Age Group Senior Championships last summer.

Messerschmidt, as you may remember from previous reporting, is currently back in Arizona while he cleans up his academic record. Messerschmidt had been an All-American at California, but is missing this semester due to grades.
