22-year-old Sarah Gibson snagged a spot to swim the 50 fly at the World Championships in three weeks in a time trial over Abbey Weitzeil. Gibson went 26.40 to get under the 26.49 FINA A standard. Weitzeil was second in the time trial at 26.76.
Kelsi Worrell originally won the 50 fly earlier in the week and automatically qualified for Budapest in the event. The qualification rules state that the winner of the 50 strokes automatically qualify for World Championships. The second swimmer will be determined by the highest finishing swimmer who was already on the team in another event.
Since no one in the A-final of the 50 fly had made the team, Gibson was next in line. But she had not gotten under the FINA A standard so she swam the time trial in order to solidify her place on the team in that event. Gibson will swim the 50 and 100 fly in Budapest in three weeks.
