Samantha Bromberg Added to Pan American Team

Samantha “Murphy” Bromberg (Bexley, Ohio/Austin, Texas) has been added to the U.S. Pan American Team after Mary Beth Dunnichay (Elwood, Ind./West Lafayette, Ind.) withdrew due to injury. Diving events at the Pan American Games are set for July 10-13 in Toronto, Ontario.

Bromberg is a six-time national champion, with three individual 10-meter titles, two synchronized 10-meter titles and one mixed synchronized 10-meter title.

Dunnichay was to compete in the synchronized 10-meter competition with Delaney Schnell (Tucson, Ariz.) as well as in the individual 10-meter event. Bromberg will replace her on both events. Dunnichay and Schnell earned their spot on the team after placing second together at the USA Diving Synchronized National Championships in Greensboro, N.C., in April.

While Schnell has not competed synchronized 10-meter with any diver other than Dunnichay, she and Bromberg were identified as a potential pairing at a synchronized assessment camp in January.  When replacing one athlete and not the entire synchronized team, the Pan American Games selection procedures indicate that a compatible diver as recommended by USA Diving’s High Performance Director and approved by the Committee for Competitive Excellence shall replace the injured athlete.

This latest setback continues a string of injuries for Dunnichay, who earlier this year returned to international competition for the first time since 2011 when she competed with Schnell at a FINA World Series meet in London in May.

The U.S. Pan American Diving Team is subject to approval by the United States Olympic Committee.
