Ryan Murphy Leads Cal Past Stanford on Senior Day

Ryan Murphy closed his career in Cal’s pool in stunning fashion on Saturday.

Murphy set two pool records at Spieker Aquatics Complex to lead No. 2 Cal past rival No. 11 Stanford 136-105 on senior day.

Murphy, an Olympic gold medalist, broke the pool record in the 200-yard individual medley (1:44.85) and teamed with Connor Hoppe, Matthew Josa and Pawel Sendyk to break the pool record in the 200 medley relay (1:25.61).

Murphy also won the 200 backstroke (1:42.37) in his final dual meet, along with fellow seniors Hunter Cobleigh, Jonathan Fiepke, Dillon Williams and Long Gutierrez, who competed alongside Murphy at the 2016 Olympics, swimming for Mexico.

Cal sophomore Andrew Seliskar won three events. The reigning Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month won the the 200 freestyle (1:35.46), 200 butterfly (1:44.85) and 200 breaststroke (1:57.01). Freshman Michael Jensen won the 50 free (19.70) and 100 free (43.49).

Stanford went 1-2-3 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, led by True Sweetser (9:00.25). Liam Egan (9:09.37) and Grant Shoults (9:14.97) followed.

Stanford dominated the diving events, winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards. Bradley Christensen (385.35) won 1-meter, with Cameron Thatcher (324.90) in second. Ted Miclau (363.98) won 3-meter, with Tarek Abdelghany (353.78) and Thatcher (342.60) completing the sweep.

The teams next compete at the Pac-12 Championships Mar. 1-4 in Federal Way, Wash.
