Roxon Sets Disability World Record in 1500 Freestyle
GANDER, Newfoundland, May 8. SWIMMING the short-course version of the 1500 freestyle, Canada's Katarina Roxon set a world disability record in the S9 category by covering the distance in 22:04.73. Roxon bettered the previous mark of 24:28.92, which was held by Laura Bellars of Great Britain. In February, Roxon actually went 22:38.27, but her time was not submitted to the International Paralympic Committee in time for ratification.
"She decided to do the event again as the world record she (had) demolished by almost two minutes in Corner Brook was not registered within the 14 days time with IPC, " said coach and father Leonard Roxon. "Naturally her competitive spirit kicked in and she wanted to attempt the world record again. What no one expected is the way she demolished her own record set only in February, just three months ago."
